How to Choose A Bed Frame

Posted by on August 28, 2019 .

Choosing the right bed for you can be such a daunting task. After all, it’s the biggest piece of furniture in your sanctuary and you’ll spend a third of your time using it. Not to mention, it’s also a financial investment for your home and your health.

As always, LAVINO is here to help with some useful information that you should consider when looking to buy your perfect bed frame.

The first thing you need to consider is the bed SIZE.

A bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom so a bed that’s too large for the room can easily become overpowering.

If you already have a mattress, place it where you’d like the bed to go so you can visualise the room’s space. If you don’t have one yet, you can use masking tape to map out the dimensions of your preferred bed size. Side note: our Valencia bed frame comes with a FREE Nannoflexx spring mattress (Check it out from our LAZADA Store NOW).

Don’t forget to consider all the other furniture that will be going into the room, like your wardrobe, dressing table, dressers, drawers and all that jazz. If all these additional furniture was present in the room, would you have the room to walk around comfortably? After all, a room that feels cluttered will make it harder for you to relax at the end of a long workday.

Next up - the TYPE: a platform bed or a bed base: which one is right for you?

Platform beds are extremely popular, thanks to the affordable price tag and the space-saving value it brings to smaller spaces. The elevated base provide the perception of more space and can be used for storage. However, platform beds are not the best option for you if you have back or knee problems. This is because they’re designed to be lower to the ground, making getting in and out of bed a little awkward.

If you like a firmer bed, you might prefer a platform bed because the mattress sits directly on top of a solid platform. This is bad news for side sleepers though as the firmness will make it more difficult for your mattress to conform to the contours of your body.

BONUS TIP: To find the ideal bed height for you, sit on the edge of your mattress or bed with your feet flat on the ground. If your knees are higher than your hips, it's too low. If your knees are lower than your hips, then it might be too high.

On the other hand, you could opt for a more solid bed base. These bed frames are usually upholstered and come in two types (Box-spring or foundation), though they can look very similar.

A box-spring consists of a sturdy wooden frame covered in cloth and containing springs. The springs are enhances the support for your mattress and the wooden structure provides a firm base. If you opt for this type, be sure to choose a style where the base is lifted off of the ground to prevent mould as a lack of air-circulation can become an issue.

A foundation has wooden slats underneath its fabric cover. The sole purpose of this bed base is to support the mattress.

I hear you asking, “What are slats and why have I never heard of them?”

Slats are an extremely important, yet invisible component of your bed frame because the wider the distance between the slats, the greater the chance of wearing and tearing the mattress. It shouldn’t be wider than 6.4 centimetres or 2.5 inches apart. In other words, it can make or break the durability of your bed (a.k.a. the biggest financial and emotional investment in your home).

There are two common types of slats: sprung and flat slats. Flat wooden slats are the cheaper option that still provides firm support. Sprung slats have curved wooden slats within the frame that gives a natural bounce to adjust to your profile. The thicker the sprung slats are, the more firm the base will feel.

Lastly, the biggest appeal of an upholstered bed frame is the unrivaled COMFORT. The cushioned support and soft headboard allows you to sit up in bed. The Valencia bed frame takes this to the next level with individual adjustable headrests, where you and your partner can enjoy your own preference at the same time! Additionally, it comes with premium CASA leather material that is suitable for your contemporary and modern bedroom style.

We sincerely hope you find this information helpful in your decision making process.
